h_da is Partner of European University of Technology

10/07/2020/in h_da, h_da, Research, Teaching /by Dirk Burkhardt

The Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (h_da) is part of the “European University of Technology” under the permission of the European Commission. The eight universities involved convinced the EU Commission with their vision of a networked European University. Together, the university partners want to improve their quality and competitiveness and promote European values and identity. Numerous university members could benefit from the growing together of universities – students, for example, from better mutual recognition of academic achievements. EU Commissioner Thierry Breton is one of the supporters of the project. The h_da is one of only two selected universities for applied sciences in Germany.

The consortium led by the Technical University of Troyes brings together 100,000 students and 12,000 employees. The alliance with the name “European University of Technology”, or “EUt +” for short, will initially receive funding of five million euros – with good prospects for additional EU funds. In a pilot project, the partners first want to work out the focal points of the cooperation. This could include facilitating the exchange of scientists over longer periods of time – as well as closer coordination of teaching content so that students can seamlessly take modules at a partner university. At the end of this development, there could even be joint European degrees. The background to the merger is the shared realization that global challenges such as climate change, resource overuse and growing inequality, as well as the social consequences of digitization, can only be solved together.

The European University of Technology consists of eight alliance members:

  • University of Technology of Troyes (France)
  • Technical University of Sofia (Bulgaria)
  • Cyprus University of Technology (Cyprus)
  • Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (Germany)
  • Technological University Dublin (Ireland)
  • Riga Technical University (Latvia)
  • Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (Romania)
  • Polytechnic University of Cartagena (Spain)

Kickoff of the Stategic Networking Project VisCOST

18/02/2020/in Action, Allgemein, News, Project, Research /by Dirk Burkhardt

The now started project VisCOST aims to create a European research network to promote innovation and technology management through the interdisciplinary use of methods of visual analysis, artificial intelligence, simulation, prediction and planning of new technologies and innovations for corporate purposes (smart manufacturing, early technology detection etc.), the optimization of government strategies (e-governance) and the involvement of European citizens in government decisions (e-participation) but also in research. The core targets on answering the research question “How can innovations be created and strengthened, and future technologies as well as possible scenarios be predicted by the approaches that are currently at the forefront of technology research in order to make strategic decisions in a more targeted manner?”. A very interdisciplinary research is necessary to answer this question. Knowledge from management, such as innovation, technology and information management, but also strategic planning and predictions in companies (corporate foresight) must be brought in from economics.

European connected: h_da accepted in the EUA

15/11/2019/in Action, Action, Allgemein, News, Research /by Dirk Burkhardt

The Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences is now a full member of the European University Association (EUA). At its council meeting on 28 October 2019, the EUA approved the application for h_da. The admission criteria included proof that the university is a valid research organization and has sufficient quality management. It was also required that the German Rectors’ Conference support the motion.

The EUA is a non-profit organization and, with over 800 members in 48 countries, the largest association of European universities. It promotes transnational exchange between university management, teachers and administration. At the same time, as an interest group, it influences EU policy in the field of higher education, research and innovation.

“Membership gives us the opportunity to strengthen the voice of universities of applied sciences at the European level,” emphasizes Prof. Dr. med. Arnd Steinmetz, Vice President Research and Scientific Infrastructure and outlined further, “The admission to the EUA is an honor for us.”

New Collaboration Network Started for European Collaborative Research Actions

28/07/2019/in Action, Action, News, Project, Research /by Dirk Burkhardt

We have successfully initiated a new European Research Network to strengthen and supporting actions in respect of European collaborative research. The main goal of this network is to create a sustainable European (but not limited on Europe) strategic alliance to foster European research and innovation in the area of Visual Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Simulation, Prediction, Smart Manufacturing and Technology and Innovation Management including innovations for business, manufacturing and eGovernance. On the fundament of the research network, research actions such as preparing a funding proposal (e.g. COST actions) should be faced and simplified in particular toward finding partners and expertise.

The research network is a major goal and outcome of the EuroStraNet project. The project was setup to define a strategy, build an initial fundament and finding partners to start with this new strong collaboration ship.

If you as researcher and/or representative of a research institution or company are interested in joining the network, you are more than welcome. You are just asked to mail us a logo of your institution and a brief description of your research area and interests.

The event “Information Science Trends: Search Engines and Information Retrieval”, organized and hosted by the European Chapter of the Association for Information Science and Technology, focuses on certain research topics introduced by invited speeches from research and industry. The major covered research areas are:

  • Retrieval research on web search engines, web services, professional information services, social media
  • Information seeking behavior
  • Information retrieval
  • Discovery systems
  • People interacting with search systems
  • Searching in the library and other scientific contexts
  • Understanding user behavior

Additionally, they will provide networking space to energetically share ideas and interests from the fields of information science and related disciplines.

At this event Prof. Dr. Nazemi gives a speech on “Visual Trend Analytics in Digital Libraries”, in particular based on the experiences with the own developed Scitics solution. Here he gives an overview about current research actions and challenges toward visual trend analysis, but also on opportunities and benefits for companies. In particular the digitalization challenges a number of small and medium sized enterprises to be aware of modern technologies and trends that revolute the market or impacts the current businesses

Major Cities of Europe Web Seminar toward Digital Ethics, Humanism and Research – Laying the Foundation for Rethinking Cities

09/09/2020/in EuroStraNet, Event, VisCOST, Workshop, Workshop /by Dirk Burkhardt

We are glad to announce that we get the chance to present our intended action of a collaborative European research action in Europe at the upcoming web seminar “Digital Ethics, Humanism and Research, laying the foundation for Rethinking Cities” of the Major Cities of Europe. The title of our project proposal and contribution to the web seminar will be “Research action call for proposals: Visual Trend Analytics for the Society” and is planned in frames of a European research-action.

Under our coordination of our group and in collaboration with other associated organisations MCE is cooperating as responsible for dissemination to the submission of a proposal for a european research-action. The frame should be the European Network for Cooperation in Science and Technology. It provides networking opportunities for researchers and innovators to strengthen Europe’s capacity to address scientific, technological, and societal challenges. Our proposal will be focused on Analytical Reasoning by applying machine learning approaches, artificial intelligence, natural language processing and visualizations to allow to get deep insights into the different domains of various stakeholders and enable to solve complex tasks. The main outcome of the action for municipalities will be the identification of current challenges that require analytical reasoning and providing technological solutions for these by the research-action technological partners. The current institutions that are interested in this action are listed on: https://vis.h-da.de/network.html.
