Lennart Sina defended his Master Thesis on Visual Analytics for Unstructured Data and Scalable Data Models

04/11/2021/in Allgemein, h_da, Teaching, Thesis/by Dirk Burkhardt

In the thesis, Lennart Sina conceptualized and implemented a visual analytics system that scales data through middleware to enable more efficient analysis. For this purpose, diverse approaches and systems were investigated, which led to a coherent concept. The concept was implemented and connected to an existing database, enabling real-world use of the system and real-world conditions. The scientific contribution of the present work is three-fold: (1) the concept of a visual analytics system to scale data, (2) a novel data model, and (3) a novel and a fully implemented visual dashboard that also enables reporting.

Article Published to Visual Data Analytics in impact Magazine for Applied Research and Art

04/06/2021/in Allgemein, Business, h_da, h_da, Personal, Research, Teaching/by Dirk Burkhardt

The impact Magazine for Applied Research and Art of the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences published an article, based on an interview with Prof. Dr. Kawa Nazemi, to the research field Visual Data Analytics.

The article is about how tangible patterns can be discerned from huge data sets with the help of visual analysis and representation, and how applicable predictions can be made using a combination of artificial and human intelligence: That is the specialty of Kawa Nazemi, professor for computer science at the h_da’s Department of Media. The head of the Human-Computer Interaction and Visual Analytics research group is a sought-after expert in this still-young field and is also successfully making his mark on the international stage.

Irtaza Rasheed defended his Master Thesis on Name Disambiguation on Digital Library Data for an Enhanced Profile Analysis in Visual Trend Analytics

12/03/2021/in Allgemein, h_da, Teaching, Thesis/by Dirk Burkhardt

In his thesis, Irtaza Rasheed implementated a universal name disambiguation approach that considers almost any existing property to identify authors. After an author of a paper is identied, the normalized name writing form on the paper is used to refine the author model and even give an overview about the different writing forms of the author’s name. This can be achieved by first examine the research on Human-Computer Interaction specifically with focus on (Visual) Trend Analysis. Furthermore, a research on different name disambiguation techniques. After that, building a concept and implementing a generalized method to identify author name and affiliation disambiguation while evaluating different properties.

Midhad Blazevic defended his Master Thesis on Visual Search and Exploration for Scientific Publications through Similarity

18/09/2020/in Allgemein, h_da, Teaching, Thesis/by Dirk Burkhardt

In his thesis, Midhad Blazevic alyzes exploratory search systems which use sophisticated features, visualizations and similarity-based algorithms to enhance exploratory searches. Examining how similarity algorithms are currently used in combination with elements from information retrieval, natural language processing and visualizations, but also examine what exploratory search is, what the requirements are and what makes it so special in modern times. Furthermore, the user himself or herself will be analyzed as user behavior during exploratory searches is a key factor that has to be taken into consideration when looking to optimize the exploratory search process overall. Based on these aspects, means of improvement will be developed and showcased, which will be used to determine if there is an improvement in comparison to other well-known systems. The outcome of this thesis will present a prototype of an exploratory search system along with a practical use case.

h_da is Partner of European University of Technology

10/07/2020/in h_da, h_da, Research, Teaching/by Dirk Burkhardt

The Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (h_da) is part of the “European University of Technology” under the permission of the European Commission. The eight universities involved convinced the EU Commission with their vision of a networked European University. Together, the university partners want to improve their quality and competitiveness and promote European values and identity. Numerous university members could benefit from the growing together of universities – students, for example, from better mutual recognition of academic achievements. EU Commissioner Thierry Breton is one of the supporters of the project. The h_da is one of only two selected universities for applied sciences in Germany.

The consortium led by the Technical University of Troyes brings together 100,000 students and 12,000 employees. The alliance with the name “European University of Technology”, or “EUt +” for short, will initially receive funding of five million euros – with good prospects for additional EU funds. In a pilot project, the partners first want to work out the focal points of the cooperation. This could include facilitating the exchange of scientists over longer periods of time – as well as closer coordination of teaching content so that students can seamlessly take modules at a partner university. At the end of this development, there could even be joint European degrees. The background to the merger is the shared realization that global challenges such as climate change, resource overuse and growing inequality, as well as the social consequences of digitization, can only be solved together.

The European University of Technology consists of eight alliance members:

  • University of Technology of Troyes (France)
  • Technical University of Sofia (Bulgaria)
  • Cyprus University of Technology (Cyprus)
  • Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (Germany)
  • Technological University Dublin (Ireland)
  • Riga Technical University (Latvia)
  • Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (Romania)
  • Polytechnic University of Cartagena (Spain)

25/06/2020/in Allgemein, h_da, Research, Technology/by Kawa Nazemi

IEEE is the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. IEEE has more than 423,000 members in more than 160 countries working to inspire a global community through publications, conferences, technology standards, and professional and educational activities.

Prof. Dr. Kawa Nazemi has been elevated to senior member of IEEE. The IEEE Board of Directors announced this decision in a virtual meeting in June 2020.

The IEEE Senior Membership is only awarded to a very limited number of members who have contributed significantly to the further development or application of science and technology. Less than 8% of the members worldwide are awarded senior member status based on their merits in research, profession and teaching.

Master Student Interviewed toward her Thesis in Detection of Fake News with AI

10/06/2020/in Allgemein, h_da, Research, Technology, Thesis/by Dirk Burkhardt

Mina Schütz wrote her master thesis under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Kawa Nazemi and Prof. Dr. Melanie Siegel toward “Detection and Identification of Fake News: Binary Content Classification with a Pre-Trained Language Model” at Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT), Center for Digital Safety & Security in Vienna. During her work, she could successfully conceptualize and develop a system that enables the classification of news with a high probability as fake or real on the basis of Artificial Intelligence algorithm. The work is a great product of scientific and empirical acting and will be published in the scientific world soon.

For her excellent work and the high societal relevance, the impact magazine of the h_da has interviewed her to outline the topic and her approach in a better understandable manner, particularly for non-computer-science experts. The full interview is available (in German only) on: https://impact.h-da.de/corona-und-fakenews.
