Research Day 2019 of the Hessian Universities of Applied Sciences (HAW)

October 29th was an important day for researchers in the applied research domain in Hesse, since they stayed in focus at the the Research Day 2019 of the Hessian Universities of Applied Sciences (HAW). On this day the spotlight of the he Hessen State Ministry for Higher Education, Research and the Arts layed on current results and achievements of researchers. Next to several awards for research results, it was also a great opportunity to show results and use the chance for networking.

Our team was invited to attend the event and presented ongoing results toward Advanced Visual Analytical Reasoning for Technology and Innovation Management, particularly the progress of the Hessen funded research project AVARTIM. As brief overview to the Visual Trend Analytics and Visual Business Analytics topic, we provided a poster with the summary of our current insights, which led to a variety of interesting discussions and new contacts for promising further collaboration actions – among other also for our planned European research network.

We really enjoyed the event and the opportunity to get connected with other Hessian researchers and look forward for some further collaborative actions – and, of course, the next Research Day of the Hessian Universities of Applied Sciences (HAW).

Paper accepted at 14th International Symposium on Visual Computing (ISVC 2019)

Our paper entitled “A Visual Analytics Approach for Analyzing Technological Trends in Technology and Innovation Management” is accepted at the visual computing conference ISVC 2019 in Lake Tahoe, NV, USA. The purpose of the International Symposium on Visual Computing (ISVC) is to provide a first-class forum for researchers, scientists, engineers and practitioners throughout the world to present their latest research findings, ideas, developments and applications in visual computing. ISVC seeks papers describing contributions to the state of the art and state of the practice in the four central areas of visual computing: computer vision, computer graphics, virtual reality, and visualization. The paper reflects some new on-going advancements of our innovative Trend Analytics solution Scitics.

Paper: A Visual Analytics Approach for Analyzing Technological Trends in Technology and Innovation Management

Abstract:
Visual Analytics provides with a combination of automated techniques and interactive visualizations huge analytics possibilities in technology and innovation management. Thereby not only the use of machine learning data mining methods plays an important role. Due to the high interaction capabilities, it provides a more user-centered approach, where users are able to manipulate the entire analysis process and get the most valuable information. Existing Visual Analytics systems for Trend Analytics and technology and innovation management do not really make use of this unique feature and do not include the human in the analysis process. Outcomes from research on information search, information visualization and technology management can lead to more sophisticated Visual Analytics systems that involved the human in the entire analysis process. We propose in this paper a new interaction approach for Visual Analytics in technology and innovation management with a special focus on technological trend analytics.

Insight on Visual Text Analytics for Technology and Innovation Management at OpenRheinMain Conference

We get the opportunity to give some insights to “Visual Text Analytics for Technology and Innovation Management”, based on our core Trend Analytics technology Scitics, on the OpenRheinMain Conference. We want to give insights on how Visual Analytics techniques can be used to enable effective technology and innovation management on behalf of external/web data as well as internal/company data.

The OpenRheinMain (ORM 2019) is the 1st edition of an annual IT conference on open source and emerging digital technologies. This includes, but is not limited to, Open-Source, Intelligent Automation and DevOps, Cloud Computing, and Internet of Things. The purpose of the conference is to interlink researchers and industrial partner of the Rhein Main region. Therefore, the conference considers stakeholders from both in an appropriate proportion. The conference will take place on September 13th, 2019 at Darmstadt University of Applied Science.

Due to heterogeneity of the event participants, the chances are high to strengthen the cooperation with local enterprises. We expect, that this will be relevant for further research actions to strengthen  the local region.

Best Paper Award at the iV 2019

We are proud to announce that our last paper “Visual Analytics for Analyzing Technological Trends from Text” at the iV2019 conference in Paris was honored with “The Best Paper Award” for the innovative contribution in terms of originality of concepts and application. The “Best Paper Awards” is given to contributions which will be selected by the committee among the papers presented in iV2019 and applied for the award. Study’s relevance to the symposium’s scope, its scientific contribution, writing/presentation style will be considered in the evaluation process as well.

Paper accepted at VARE 2019

At the next conference in Virtual and Augmented Reality in Education (VARE 2019), we are happy that out paper toward mobile visual trend analytics was accepted for presentation. The conference takes place from Sep. 18 to Sep. 20, 2019 in Kisbon, Portugal. The VARE is an annual event that brings together trainers in all areas of knowledge and educational levels as well as researchers and scientists from virtual technologies as well data advanced visualization and virtualization. In general, main aim is to improve teaching and training, and data analysis through virtual and augmented technologies use and to discuss problems and solutions in mentioned areas to identify new issues, and to shape future directions for research.

Paper: A Mobile Visual Analytics Approach for Instant Trend Analysis in Mobile Contexts

Abstract:
The awareness of market trends becomes relevant for a broad number of market branches, in particular the more they are challenged by the digitalization. Trend analysis solutions help business executives identifying upcoming trends early. But solid market analysis takes their time and are often not available on consulting or strategy discussions. This circumstance often leads to unproductive debates where no clear strategy, technology etc. could be identified. Therefore, we propose a mobile visual trend analysis approach that enables a quick trend analysis to identify at least the most relevant and irrelevant aspects to focus debates on the relevant options. To enable an analysis like this, the exhausting analysis on powerful workstations with large screens has to adopted to mobile devices within a mobile behavior. Our main contribution is the therefore a new approach of a mobile knowledge cockpit, which provides different analytical visualizations within and intuitive interaction design.

Paper: Visual Analytics for Analyzing Technological Trends from Text

Abstract:
The awareness of emerging technologies is essential for strategic decision making in enterprises. Emerging and decreasing technological trends could lead to strengthening the competitiveness and market positioning. The exploration, detection and identification of such trends can be essentially supported through information visualization, trend mining and in particular through the combination of those. Commonly, trends appear first in science and scientific documents. However, those documents do not provide sufficient information for analyzing and identifying emerging trends. It is necessary to enrich data, extract information from the integrated data, measure the gradient of trends over time and provide effective interactive visualizations. We introduce in this paper an approach for integrating, enriching, mining, analyzing, identifying and visualizing emerging trends from scientific documents. Our approach enhances the state of the art in visual trend analytics by investigating the entire analysis process and providing an approach for enabling human to explore undetected potentially emerging trends.

Visual Trend Analytics@Information Science Trends: Search Engines and Information Retrieval

The event “Information Science Trends: Search Engines and Information Retrieval”, organized and hosted by the European Chapter of the Association for Information Science and Technology, focuses on certain research topics introduced by invited speeches from research and industry. The major covered research areas are:

  • Information seeking behavior
  • Information retrieval
  • Discovery systems
  • People interacting with search systems
  • Searching in the library and other scientific contexts

At this event Prof. Dr. Nazemi gives a speech on “Visual Trend Analytics in Digital Libraries”, in particular based on the experiences with the own developed Scitics solution. Here he gives an overview about current research actions and challenges toward visual trend analysis, but also on opportunities and benefits for companies. In particular the digitalization challenges a number of small and medium sized enterprises to be aware of modern technologies and trends that revolute the market or impacts the current businesses

Kickoff of the National AVARTIM Project

Today is the kickoff of the national project AVARTIM. The project has to goal of the early recognition of technological trends and the targeted handling of market and technology signals are becoming increasingly important for companies. As part of the project, “AVARTIM” is to be used to develop a software-supported process for recognizing and evaluating trends, market and technology signals in order to sustainably support the process of innovation and technology management. As part of the project, an infrastructure will be set up at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, which is modular and thus able to react quickly to technological changes. The infrastructure to be developed here serves as preliminary research and initial technology both for industrial use by and with the SME partners as well as for the application for joint projects. First of all, participation in the LOEWE funding line 3 of the state of Hessen and subsequently in the tender for LEIT-ICT / Big Data technologies of the EU is aimed at.

Two papers in Journal of ICTE in Transportation and Logistics 2018

We are glad to announce that two submission of us were accepted in the Elsevier journal Procedia Computer Science of ICTE in Transportation and Logistics 2018. The ICTE in Transportation and Logistics is an interdisciplinary annual issue operating on the edge between transportation, logistics and computer science. The aim of the journal is promotion of introduction the latest IT achievements and active research methods in transportation and logistics involving citizens in training and decision making through participation in social networking. The audience of the journal are academicians, municipalities, professional associations, public and private funded organizations, industry professionals, researchers and students. The accepted papers are:

#1 Visual analytical dashboards for comparative analytical tasks – a case study on mobility and transportation

Mobility, logistics and transportation are emerging fields of research and application. Humans’ mobility behavior plays an increasing role for societal challenges. Beside the societal challenges these areas are strongly related to technologies and innovations. Gathering information about emerging technologies plays an increasing role for the entire research in this ares. Humans’ information processing can be strongly supported by Visual Analytics that combines automatic modelling and interactive visualizations. The juxtapose orchestration of interactive visualization enables gathering more information in a shorter time. We propose in this paper an approach that goes beyond the established methods of dashboarding and enables visualizing different databases, data-sets and sub-sets of data with juxtaposed visual interfaces. Our approach should be seen as an expandable method. Our main contributions are an in-depth analysis of visual task models and an approach for juxtaposing visual layouts as visual dashboards to enable solving complex tasks. We illustrate our main outcome through a case study that investigates the area of mobility and illustrates how complex analytical tasks can be performed easily by combining different visual interfaces.

#2 Visual legal analytics – A visual approach to analyze law-conflicts of e-Services for e-Mobility and transportation domain

The impact of the electromobility has next to the automotive industry also an increasing impact on the transportation and logistics domain. In particular the today’s starting switches to electronic trucks/scooter lead to massive changes in the organization and planning in this field. Public funding or tax reduction for environment friendly solutions forces also the growth of new mobility and transportation services. However, the vast changes in this domain and the high number of innovations of new technologies and services leads also into a critical legal uncertainty. The clarification of a legal status for a new technology or service can become cost intensive in a dimension that in particular startups could not invest. In this paper we therefore introduce a new approach to identify and analyze legal conflicts based on a business model or plan against existing laws. The intention is that an early awareness of critical legal aspect could enable an early adoption of the planned service to ensure its legality. Our main contribution is distinguished in two parts. Firstly, a new Norm-graph visualization approach to show laws and legal aspects in an easier understandable manner. And secondly, a Visual Legal Analytics approach to analyze legal conflicts e.g. on the basis of a business plans. The Visual Legal Analytics approach aims to provide a visual analysis interface to validate the automatically identified legal conflicts resulting from the pre-processing stage with a graphical overview about the derivation down to the law roots and the option to check the original sources to get further details. At the end analyst can so verify conflicts as relevant and resolve it by advancing e.g. the business plan or as irrelevant. An evaluation performed with lawyers has proofed our approach.

Leading Article to „Visual Analytics for Early Technology Trend Detection”

Prof. Nazemi wrote an interesting leading article for the Research Center of Applied Informatics about his research toward visual analytics technologies for early technology trend detection.

In this article he stated the relevance of noticing early indicators for the detection of new and, above all, socially and economically important technologies that can provide scientific publications. For this purpose, he and his team developed a trend analytics solution that covers a data processing pipeline beginning with the collection and transformation of unstructured text to a final visual interactive interface that enables analysts to elaborate trends, leaders and further relevant business aspects.
